Vacation Bucket List: The Top 10 Trips of a Lifetime You Should Take

Find people with high expectations and a low tolerance for excuses. They’ll have higher expectations for you than you have for yourself. Don’t flatter yourself that this has much to do with you – this is just who they are. Don’t look for “nice” in these relationships. Look for trust.

Be fearless in front of them with your ideas as many times as they’ll let you

Beauty Dust is very pretty to look at and it tastes like nothing, which is great. Here is what it’s supposed to do: This ancient empiric formula expands beauty through alchemizing elements legendary for their youth preserving, fortifying and tonifying qualities. Glowing supple skin, lustrous shiny hair and twinkling bright eyes are holistically bestowed from the inside out.

I actually first read this as alkalizing meaning effecting pH level, and I was like, OK I guess I understand how that could positively effect your body, but alchemizing means turning elements to gold basically through magic. That lead me to research each ingredient because I know alchemy is not actually happening in my body when I eat this, since alchemy is not real.

In addition to loving beauty and taking care of myself, I also love opening people minds to other paths of self-care, and good marketing and I can honestly say that I use and personally love this product but I’m not sure for which reason.

I think it made me think about it more and really consider why I was choosing to add this to my routine

It poses an interesting question for me on the wellness category – will people be willing to buy in, or does eating something change your “sniff” test on the believe-ability of the claims?

The color is very long lasting and they have an interesting texture that’s like a powder and a cream but neither really. They’re made with pure pigments and oils and will never melt with the warmth of your skin because they don’t contain any waxes. You can literally use them for anything – obviously as eye shadow and liner, but the light shade is a great highlighter, and the red can be used for lip or blush with a little balm.

There’s also a little pouch to store the rollerballs, and a card with different inspirations as to how to blend them on your skin – but it’s foolproof. You can’t make a mess if you mix them all up.

Basic Fish Farming Tips

Fish farms or fish farming is a form of aquaculture. The act of fish farming is about raising fish commercially in tanks or enclosures for human consumption. There are different types of fish farms that utilize different aquiculture methods

cage system

The first method is the cage system which use cages that are placed in lakes, ponds and oceans that contain the fish. This method is also widely referred to as off-shore cultivation. Fish are kept in the cage like structures and are “artificially fed” and harvested. The fish farming cage method has made numerous technological advances over the years, especially with reducing diseases and environmental concerns. However, the number one concern of the cage method is fish escaping and being loose among the wild fish population.

pond systems

The second method is irrigation ditch or pond systems for raising fish. This basic requirement for this method is to have a ditch or a pond that holds water. This is a unique system because at a small level, fish are artificially fed and the waste produced from the fish is then used to fertilize farmers’ fields. On a larger scale, mostly in ponds, the pond is self-sustaining as it grows plants and algae for fish food.

The third method of fish farming is called composite fish culture which is a type of fish farming that allows both local fish species and imported fish species to coexist in the same pond. The number of species depends, but it is sometimes upwards of six fish species in a single pond. The fish species are always carefully chosen to ensure that species can coexist and reduce competition for food.

The number of species depends, but it is sometimes upwards of six fish species in a single pond. The fish species are always carefully chosen to ensure that species can coexist and reduce competition for food

integrated recycling systems

The fourth method of fish farming is called integrated recycling systems which is considered the largest scale method of “pure” fish farming. This approach uses large plastic tanks that are placed inside a greenhouse. There are hydroponic beds that are placed near the plastic tanks. The water in the plastic tanks is circulated to the hydroponic beds, where the fish feed waste goes to provide nutrients to the plant crops that are grown in the hydroponic beds. The majority of types of plants that are grown in the hydroponic beds are herbs such as parsley and basil.

fry farming

The last type of fish farming method is called classic fry farming this method is also known as “flow through system”. This is when sport fish species are raised from eggs and are put in streams and released.

There are a number of different fish species that are raised on fish farms, the most common fish spices raised are salmon, carp, tilapia, catfish and cod.

Catfish farming

Catfish are easy to farm in warmer climates. Catfish are predominantly farmed in fresh water ponds and fed mostly soybeans, corn and rice. Catfish are often considered one of the more sustainable fish specifies for fish farming purposes. Cultivating catfish first began in the 1900s and became commercialized in the 1950s. Catfish is populous because of its health benefits and market demand. Farm-raised catfish are usually harvested at 18 months of age where as wild catfish usually get much bigger. There are a number of catfish species, but the three most prominent ones are blue catfish, channel catfish, and flathead catfis.

Tilapia farming

Tilapia is the third most popular fish used in fish farming or aquaculture, with the first two being carp and salmon. They have increased in popularity due to their high protein, large size and growth capabilities. Tilapia is a tropical fish that requires warmer water to survive. The ideal water temperature is usually between 28 to 30 degrees C. Tilapia fish are known to reproduce rapidly and this is a challenge for managing tilapia fish species for farming use. If not managed properly, fish will aggressively compete for food which may result in stunted growth. Therefore, males are almost used exclusively. Tilapias are resilient towards fighting off diseases and parasites. Tilapia fish farming originated in Africa and is popular in Honduras, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and Indonesia. Tilapia fish require a cereal-based diet and don’t eat other fish, but they are also considered to be one of the most invasive fish species.

Salmon farming

Salmon is one of the most popular fish species with the most commonly farmed being Atlantic salmon. There are two other varieties of Pacific salmon that are also farmed – Chinook and Coho. Farmed salmon are vaccinated to prevent disease outbreaks and only on rare occasions do they require additional medications. There are often questions about the different colours between wild and farmed salmon – farmed salmon aren’t dyed, their colour comes from their food. Salmon feed is made to conserve wild fish stocks.

Tuna farming

Tuna fish are saltwater fish and are important in the commercial fish farming industry. Japan is the biggest consumer of tuna and has invested a significant amount of research into studying the fish. There are different species of tuna including, bluefin, yellowfin, and albacore. Bluefin tuna populations have dropped significantly in some regions due to over fishing. Farming tuna is complex as the fish are “massive” and are very active – so simulating their natural environment is extremely difficult. Most tuna for human consumption are caught in the wild and raised in a facility to increase weight gain. Tuna are carnivorous and eat other fish. Tuna are typically farmed in net pens offshore and in some cases are farmed in recirculation systems.

Eel farming

Eel fish farming emerged in the early 1950s and it is considered one of the most profitable in terms of export value in the fishing industry. However, the profit value is largely driven by the Asian markets and is culture specific. Eels are a carnivorous and catadromous fish, which means that when they are young they live in fresh water, but as they mature they migrate to the sea for breeding –spending anywhere from 8 to 30 years in freshwater before they migrate. The majority of eel farming takes place in Asia, with China, Japan and Taiwan leading as the biggest producers. Glass eels are preferred over elvers because they are easier to transport and wean onto artificial diets. Eel farming can take on one of two different forms – high intensity recirculating tank (indoors) or intensive pond facilities.

Aqua farming

Aquaculture is also known as “aqua farming” which relates to the farming of aquatic organisms such as fish. The farming aspect of aqua farming implies some aspect of intervention into the natural growing process to enhance production. According to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization – aquaculture has grown three times faster compared to land-based animal agriculture.

Fish farming supplies

Fish farming supplies are needed for the aquaculture industry. The supplies can range from feed and feeders, filtration systems, hatchery supplies, heating and cooling systems, lighting, hydroponics equipment, pluming, predator control, tanks and water treatment products just to name a few.

Feed and feeders Feed quality is important in fish farming and is vital to fish health. Depending on the feed that is given, it can help with desirable colour, growth and overall health and well-being. There are a wide variety of different feeds that are suited to different types of aqua-farming methods and species.

Water Filtration Systems Water filtration systems are important when attempting to mitigate environmental impacts. Filtration involves the removal of waste products from the water. There are a number of different types filtering systems that can be used, but it often depends on the state of the filtration process. It is important to have a staging filtration system that will ensure most optimal results.

Hatchery supplies Hatchery supplies include anything from fish graders, shipping supplies to spawning and handling containers.

Predator control Predator control tools are used in the fish’s habitat, which often includes the use of physical deterrents which may include visual and audio deterrents.

Indoor fish farming

Indoor fish farming is the alternative to cultivating fish outdoors in a cage system. With the emergence of technological advances, raising fish indoors is now possible using proper control production methods. Indoor fish farming is often very sophisticated and in some cases allow for automatic collection and processing of fish wastes into crop fertilizers. There are advantages and disadvantages to indoor fish farming:

Advantages to indoor fish farming

  • • Fish are protected from predators and weather changes.
  • • Fish are often produced faster through temperature control, water quality and feeding practices.
  • • Indoor fish farming is often considered more environmentally friendly because it requires less water and produces less waste.
  • • Avoids the chance of fish escaping and getting loose amongst wild fish populations.
  • • Allows higher stock densities and often saved farm labour input costs.
  • • It often allows greater flexibility for facility locations, which can save transportation costs if facilities are located near markets.

Disadvantages to indoor fish farming

  • • Requires electricity input costs.
  • • Requires infrastructure set-up which often requires a significant amount of startup capital.
  • • Fish raised indoors are carnivorous, which requires the capture of large amounts of other fish for their diet.

Tips to Start an Organic Farm in Uttarakhand

A lot of questions strike up in our minds when we think of starting something new. Similar is the case when one tries to start an organic farm.

Farming is considered as one of the oldest human professions. Regrettably, this noble job of producing food has somehow went out of fashion. In most countries, farming and agriculture in general is seen as a one-way ticket to poverty and drudgery. Young people are abandoning the countryside to seek better opportunities in urban areas.

In recent years, however, we meet more and more young people who are taking farming as a profession and as a practical source of profit. This is mostly because of the change in the perspective of how young people see farming.

This positive view of agriculture has increased with the growth of global population. A bigger the population means more people to feed, and therefore more food to produce. Organic food is also gaining popularity due to its high nutritional benefit.

Along these lines, the need to produce food locally is also seen as a sustainable solution to the ever increasing food requirement.

Different peoples have different perspectives on what they think they must know while planning to start an organic farm. From a management and marketing perspective, this writer is enumerating what he thinks must be the 8 factors that we must consider while setting up and maintaining an organic farm.

1. Learn the basics of organic farming

Learning the basics of natural and organic farming is the first step in starting an organic farm. This definitely gives hints of what one may expect and where one should be starting from. It is helpful to invest in a pre-hand research.

It is also important to be engaged in conversations with people who are already in the business. Participate in organic farm training programs and farmer-meet-up symposiums. The experience of another farmer who went through a similar phase is very helpful in making the exploratory process a lot smoother.

The internet also plays a huge role as there is a massive playlist tutorials, videos, and online forums about organic farming. Books relating to organic farming is also a massive resource worthy of consideration.

2. The site is key

The site plays a vital role for any venture to be successful. An organic farm’s location usually determines how the venture will turn out.

The organic farm site should be near a clean water source: water is a non-negotiable resource for crop growth and health. If the water source is far, it is much more difficult to manage the irrigation process. For a newcomer, this is a tedious consideration to make but is also crucial for the success of the venture.

The proximity of the farm to the marketplace also plays a big role in the sustainability of the farm. The farm’s closeness to the market allows for the easy transport of produce for selling. Also, this helps save costs when transporting materials to the farm.

However, site selection should also be aligned with the purpose of the organic farm. If the farm is not for a commercial purpose, the role of the above-mentioned factors will potentially decrease. The purpose of the farm also determines its size.

3. Match the land with what it is best for

While deciding on what can be grown in the land, it is extremely important to assess the site’s soil condition as well as the resources available. A plant that is indigenous to the landscape, temperature, elevation, and available resources is much easier to manage than growing a plant that is foreign to the area.

However, there are also practical ways in growing crops and animals that are not native to that specific area. Take note, though, that this might be a little challenging for first-time organic farmers.

There are also instances when the available land area is comparatively insufficient for the wide range of crops that the farmer is planning to grow. In these cases, there are many tried-and-tested workarounds for limited farming space such as vertical gardening, container farming, and intercropping, among many others.

4. Know your market

It is very important to know the type of market that a farmer is catering for. Some agricultural products may not be sellable in a certain type of market. This consideration is very helpful in making the venture sustainable.

Find out what agricultural products the market needs, what is the market’s buying capacity, and how often does the market buy such produce. It is also important to figure out how the farmer will sell products to the market. Keep a backup marketing plan, too.

5. Prepare the soil and make good compost

All good organic farm produce start with good soil. The soil’s condition directly complements the plants growing in it. Inorganic soil treatments potentially harm the environment, the plants that grow in the soil, as well as the consumers who eventually eat the food.

Good soil means soil with nutrients necessary for the growth of plants. Good soil is a mixture of compost, leaf and grass clippings, and manure, among other vital compositions.

Farmers generally benefit when they make their own compost onsite. It is easy to make and saves a lot of money. Compost helps conserve water, cut down on weeds, and keep wastes out. This step is crucial when one starts farming.

6. Take care of what you plant

The process of growing a crop is a lengthy one. Organic farming takes time and it required more attention compared to conventional farming. There are certain techniques that need to be considered depending on the plant and farm condition. Also, one organic farming technique may not necessarily work for all plants in the farm.

Water is a must for plant’s growth and health. Regular watering is necessary for the plants to grow. Generally, plants are watered 2-3 times a day depending on their type as well as the location where they are being grown. Watering the plant in the morning is very helpful as mornings are cool. Due to this, the water does not evaporate fast.

Weeding is another important maintenance task. Weeds grow in good soil and these unwanted plants get nutrients that are supposed to be for crops.

7. Seek a mentor and network with people

This might look like it is not directly related to the things we are discussing, but seasoned organic farmers believe that this is crucial. There are many instances when farmers get lost in their pursuit of organic farming, and they do not know what to do next. Books and online tutorials may help in unexpected situations, but nothing beats expert advice from a living breathing organic farmer.

It is also very important to network with people who can help in selling farm products. These people also connects organic farmers to the right markets.

8. Patience plays a key role

Some people who plan to start an organic farm wish they get organic fruits and vegetables overnight. Sorry to break the bubble, but this is not even close to what happens in reality. Growing organic crops is a slow and tedious process. A lot of times, organic farming does not go as planned. An organic farmer must be physically and mentally ready of unexpected scenarios that will arise. The farmer’s set goals must be reasonable.

Working in the farm is an everyday affair, and organic farming slow step-by-step process. The farmer needs to be persistent and patient.

While the results of an organic farm might seem attractive, the process of setting up and maintaining the farm is a tough one. It takes hard work, patience, persistence, and huge loads of optimism. The dedication involved in an organic farm is a demanding one, but in time, the fruits (and vegetables) of a farmer’s labor will be ready for the picking.

Tips Start Your Own Dairy Farm in Uttarakhand

Tips Starting Your Own Dairy Farm in Uttarakhand
Whatever your background and experience, there are some things you need to know before Your Own Dairy Farm in Uttarakhand.

Develop a Business Plan and SWOT Analysis

Whatever your background and experience, there are some things you need to know before Your Own Dairy Farm in Uttarakhand.

It is important to remember that a dairy farm is a business. Development of detailed business plan and a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) of your plan and the resources you have available will be critical to the success of your business. How many cows will you milk? Where will you market your milk? Will you hire employees? How much money do you need to live on after the dairy bills are all paid? Your business plan should include a cash flow plan that will help you set reasonable expectations for your expenses and cost of production.

Consult the Experts

Even if you grew up on a dairy and learned how to feed and milk cows from your parents and grandparents it is important to consult experts in the dairy industry as you develop your business plan and design your management system. Other dairy producers are great resources. Attend field days and open houses on dairy farms in your area and other parts of the state or country. When visiting other farms find out what has worked well on those farms and what has not worked, but keep in mind that just because something worked on one farm does not mean it will work for you on your farm. In addition to farmers, talk to veterinarians, nutritionists, agronomists, bankers, extension educators, and others that can provide different perspectives on management of your dairy.

Create a Cropping and Feeding Program

Whether you are going to feed a TMR (total mixed ration), graze your cattle, or some combination of both; dairy cattle require a certain set of nutrients to support themselves, produce milk, and grow a calf. Work with a nutritionist to develop rations for your lactating cows and dry cows and heifers if these animals are to be raised on the farm. Many dairy farms in Pennsylvania produce most if not all their own forages and many of their concentrate (grain) needs. Raising all your own feed takes land and time, not to mention equipment for planting and harvesting the crops. Hiring custom operators to plant and harvest crops, or making arrangements with neighbors to share equipment and labor can reduce your capital investment as you get started with your dairy business and are building capital. Double cropping systems, with small grain crops following corn silage, are used successfully on many Pennsylvania farms.

Create a Waste Management Plan

Dairy cattle produce a lot of manure. While this manure is often referred to as waste, if managed and used properly it can be a great resource on the farm. Manure management will be tied closely to your cropping and feeding program. If you are able to use a double cropping system on your farm it will not only allow you to produce more feed but will also allow you to apply more manure to your land. Alternatives to direct land application of manure include composting and anaerobic digestion of manure, while these options may provide additional revenue and other benefits to your dairy they will also increase the capital investment required to get your dairy started. Every farm will need a manure management plan, but depending on the size of your farm a nutrient management plan may also be required. Check with your county Conservation District or local Extension office for more information.

Build Your Equity Over Time

Dairy farming requires a large capital investment. Land, buildings, equipment, and cows are expensive and few new dairy farmers will have the capital required to purchase everything when they get started in business. Many beginning farmers begin by purchasing their cows first and renting the farm and land. These initial animals are your farms equity.

Dairy Farming is a Biological System

The dairy farm is dependent on the cow’s ability to live a healthy life, produce milk, and have calves that can become the next generation of the farm. Dairy farming requires detailed programs for herd health, reproduction and calf care in addition to the nutrition and financial aspects on the farm. Working with your veterinarian, genetics representatives and extension agents can help you develop comprehensive farm plans to create a positive future.

One Size Does Not Fit All

All dairy farms are different based on the producer’s wishes, resource requirements, market needs and more. Multiple systems exist and can be profitable. Some producers contract out their replacements to a custom heifer raiser while others diversify by selling crops, raising steers or creating a home-bottling plant. How you farm will depend on your desires, resources, and drive.

You are a Manager First

All these previous items are just pieces of the puzzle. In order to succeed you will need to combine each aspect of management into a whole farm plan. However, you don’t need to do it all. Work with trusted consultants to help you build a plan, and stick with your strengths. If you love milking cows but hate planting corn, find someone to work with who does, or contract that work out to a third party. Consider creating a farm management team or profit team that engages your consultants to be active participants in the farm’s progress.

Mushrooms Farming in Uttarakhand

Profitable Mushroom Farming
Profitable Mushroom Farming

Mushroom farming is one of the most profitable agri-business that you can start with a low investment and less space. Mushroom cultivation in India is growing gradually as an alternative source of income for many people. Worldwide, US, China, Italy and Netherlands are the top producers of mushrooms. In India, Uttar Pradesh is the leading producer of mushrooms followed by Tripura and Kerala.

In this article we will tell you complete method to cultivate paddy straw mushroom, oyster mushroom and button mushroom.

Different Types of Mushrooms

Button mushroom, oyster mushroom & paddy straw mushrooms are the three major types of used for cultivation in India. Paddy straw mushrooms can grow in temperatures ranging from 35 – 40 Degree Celcius. Oyster mushrooms on the other hand are grown in the northern plains while button mushrooms grow during the winter season. All these mushrooms of commercial importance are grown by different methods and techniques. Mushrooms are grown in special beds known as compost beds.

How to Grow Button Mushroom

Making Compost

The first step to grow mushrooms is composting that is done in the open. Compost yard for button mushroom farming is prepared on clean, raised platforms made of concrete. They should be raised so that the excess water does not get collected at the heap. Though the composting is done in the open, they should be covered to protect from rain water. Compost prepared is of 2 types – natural & synthetic compost. The compost is made in trays of dimensions 100 X 50 X 15 cm

Synthetic Compost for Mushroom Farming

The elements for synthetic compost include wheat straw, bran, urea, calcium ammonium nitrate / ammonium sulphate and gypsum. The straw should be cut to 8 to 20 cm. in length. It is then spread equally to form a thin layer on the composting yard. After this it is soaked thoroughly by sprinkling water. The next step is to blend all other ingredients like urea, bran, gypsum, calcium nitrate with the wet straw & mound them into a pile

Natural Compost

Here the ingredients required are horse dung, poultry manure, wheat straw and gypsum. Wheat straw must be sliced finely. Horse dung should not be mixed with that of other animals. It must be freshly collected & not exposed to rain. After the ingredients are mixed, they are uniformly spread on the composting yard. Water is sprayed on the surface to wet the straws. It is heaped & turned like that for synthetic manure. Due to fermentation, the temperature of the heap goes up and it gives a smell because of ammonia escaping. This is a sign that the compost has opened. The heap is turned every three days and sprinkled with water.

Filling the Compost in Trays

The prepared compost is dark brown in color. When you fill the compost into trays, it should be neither too wet nor too dry. If the compost is dry then spray a few drops of water. If too damp, then let some water to evaporate. The size of the trays for spreading the compost could be as per your convenience. But, it must be 15 to 18 cm deep. Also make sure that the trays are made of soft wood. The trays must be filled with compost to the edge and levelled on the surface.

Spawning

Spawning is basically the process of sowing the mushroom mycelium into the beds. The spawns can be obtained from certified national laboratories at nominal price. Spawning can be done in 2 ways – by scattering the compost on the bed surface in the tray or else mixing the grain spawn with compost before filling the trays. After spawning cover the trays with old newspapers. The sheet is then sprinkled with little water to maintain moisture & humidity. There must be a head space of at least 1 meter between the top tray and the ceiling.

Casing

Casing soil is made by mixing finely crushed and sieved, rotten cow dung with the garden soil. The pH should be on the alkaline side. Once ready, the casing soil has to be sterilized to kill the pests, nematodes, insects & other molds. Sterilization can be done by treating it with formalin solution or by steaming. After the casing soil is spread on the compost the temperature is maintained at 25⁰C for 72 hours & then lowered to 18⁰C. Remember that casing stage requires a lot of fresh air. Therefore the room must have sufficient ventilation facilities during the casing stage.

Cropping

After 15 to 20 days of casing, the pinheads start becoming noticeable. White colored, small-sized buttons start developing within 5 to 6 days of this stage. Mushrooms are ready for harvesting when the caps are placed tight on the short stem.

Harvesting

During harvesting, the cap should be twisted off gently. For this, you need to hold it gently with the forefingers, press against the soil & then twist off. The base of the stalk in which mycelial threads & soil particles cling should be chopped off.

Spawning

Paddy straw mushrooms are spawned on chopped, soaked paddy straws. At times they are spawned on cereal grains or millets. When they are spawned on paddy straw, they are known as straw spawn and when spawned on cereal grains, they are called grain spawn.

In India, the mushroom of this variety is grown on paddy straw. Well dried and long straws are tied together in bundles of 8 to 10 cm in diameter. Then they are chopped to uniform length of 70 to 80 cm & soaked in water for 12 to 16 hours. Excess water is then drained off.

Bed Preparation

Since the mushrooms are cultivated on raised platforms, the foundations made of bricks & soil ought to be raised. The size must be a little larger than the bedding and should be strong enough to hold the weight of the bed. A bamboo frame of the size of the foundation is put on top of the foundation. At least 4 bundles from the soaked straw is put on the frame. Another 4 bundles are located but with the loose ends in the opposite direction. These 8 bundles together make up the 1st layer of bedding. Around 12 cm away from the 1st layer, the grain spawn is scattered.

After the last layer is made, cover the whole bed with a transparent plastic sheet. However proper care must be taken to make sure that the sheet is not in contact with the bed.

Mushrooming

Usually, mushrooms begin to grow within 10 to 15 days of spawning. They continue to grow for the next 10 days. Once the volva erupts & the mushroom inside is exposed, the crop is ready for harvesting. These mushrooms being very fragile have a very short shelf life hence they must be consumed fresh.

How to grow Oyster Mushroom

Oyster Mushroom is grown where the climatic conditions are not good for the button mushrooms. It is the simplest to grow & most delicious to eat. Being very low in fat content it is usually suggested for controlling obesity & also to patients suffering from diabetes, and blood pressure.

Oyster mushroom can grow at moderate temperature that ranges from 20 – 300 C and humidity 55-70 percent for a period of 6 – 8 months in a year. It can also be cultivated in summer season by providing the extra humidity needed for its growth. In hilly areas – the best growing season is during March or April to September or October while in the lower regions it is from September or October to March or April.

The process for oyster mushroom cultivation can be divided into following 4 steps:

  • Preparation of spawn
  • Substrate preparation
  • Spawning of substrate
  • Crop management

Oyster mushroom can be cultivated on several agro-wastes having cellulose & lignin that helps in more enzyme production of cellulose, which is correlated with more yield. These consist of straw of paddy, wheat / ragi, stalk & leaves of maize, millets and cotton, used citronella leaf, sugarcane bagasse, saw dust, jute and cotton waste, used tea leaf waste, useless waste paper and synthetic compost of button mushrooms etc. It can also be cultivated with the use of industrial wastes such as paper mill sludges, coffee byproducts, tobacco waste, etc.

Introduction

Poultry industry is a fastest growing sector in Indian agriculture having annual growth rate of 8%. The total poultry population has increased by 16.81% over in the recent census and the total poultry in the country is 851.81 million. However, in previous census 2012 it was 729.21 million in numbers. Where as in terms of backyard poultry farming, there is a tremendous increase of 45.48% in the backyard poultry population from 217.49 million to 317.07 million numbers (20th Livestock Census, 2019). Backyard poultry keeping is practised by majority of the poor and marginalized rural households all over India. These households rely on low cost backyard poultry rearing to supplement and enhance their livelihoods. It not only provides nutritional security but also reduces the livelihood vulnerability, and promotes gender equity. Backyard birds are usually low producers with high resistance to diseases. The eggs produced by rural poultry are not in significant proportion with the total production, yet it helps the rural masses in self-employment and caters much needed animal protein. Though income in monetary terms from backyard poultry farming is negligible but it also acts as “Walking bank” for poor and marginal farmers. Besides income generation, rural backyard poultry provides the demand of nutrition supplementation in the form of valuable animal protein through meat and eggs to the rural families.

Advantages of backyard poultry farming

• Produce of rural poultry farming fetches high price compared to those produce from intensive poultry Farming.
• It boost up family income by better utilization of those family members like old age people, who are not suitable for other agricultural works.
• Generate employment opportunity in rural areas and help in checking migration of people to urban areas.
• Higher economic return at low initial investment.
• Integrates well with other agricultural operations.
• Provides additional income to the rural households.
• A unit can be started as low as two chickens to a large flock.
• Eggs and meat from birds reared under free range conditions have low cholesterol concentration compared to those produced under intensive poultry farming.
• Eggs and birds can easily sold in local market at high price because of growing demand for desi chickens and eggs.
• Provides egg and meat with almost no or meager investment through backyard poultry farming in free range system.
• Backyard poultry farming acts as “ATM” because as per family needs, eggs and birds can sold very easily at better price as and when needed.
• Quality of eggs and chicken are better in terms of organic farming because the birds are raised on stress free natural environment without providing antibiotic mixed commercial poultry feed.
• Alleviates protein malnutrition in vulnerable groups viz. expectant women, feeding mothers and children.
• Waste material (insects, ants, fallen grains, green grass, kitchen waste, vegetable waste etc.) can be efficiently converted in to egg and chicken meat for human consumption.
• Minimizes environmental pollution per unit poultry produce, which is otherwise a major problem with the intensive poultry farming.
• Aids in enhancing the soil fertility in backyards.

Breeds and variety suitable for backyard poultry farming

Rural poultry farming using native breeds is being practised in many developing and underdeveloped countries throughout the world. Desi or indigenous birds are generally poor performing in egg and meat production. In rural areas of India, chicken reared in backyard are mostly Desi type with low egg and meat production (Ghosh, et. al., 2005) and there is need of introduction of improved dual purpose bird having capacity to lay more eggs and gain higher body weight than the local or Desi birds. To obtain maximum profit from backyard poultry farming there is a time demand to introduce the most suitable type of poultry breeds and variety in backyard farming, which can perform better at low inputs in natural conditions. Improved chicken than can be introduced in backyard poultry farming should have following characteristics

• Good scavengers
• Hardy in nature
• Self propagating
• Broody in nature
• High mothering ability
• High Disease resistance
• Well body conformation
• Coloured and attractive plumage
• Flight & escaping capacity from predators
• Better adaptability to local climatic conditions

Considering the above said characteristics of backyard type poultry the following breeds or variety may be recommended for backyard poultry farming

CARl Debendra – This is a medium-sized dual-purpose bird suitable for backyard poultry production. It was developed by crossing coloured synthetic broiler line as male line and Rhode Island Red (RIR) as female line at Central Avian Research Institute (CARI), Izatnagar, Uttar Pradesh. The bird achieves moderate body weight of 1200 g at eight weeks of age with economic feed conversion ratio of 2.5-2.6. The meat has lower carcass and abdominal fat than broiler meat, which makes it a consumer’s delight. It is a suitable bird for rural poultry because of its better survivability and moderate egg production ability. Annual egg production of CARI Debendra is 190-200 eggs.

CARI Nirbheek – It is a cross of Indian native breed Aseel with CARI Red developed for free range as well as backyard poultry production. These are very active birds, large in size, aggressive in nature with high stamina and majestic gait. They are able to save themselves from predators due to their fighting characters and activeness. They are also adopted to all climatic zones of the country for backyard production. Annual egg production of CARI Nirbheek is 198 eggs.

CARI Upcari – Has been developed utilizing Indian native chicken with Frizzle plumage. These are multicoloured birds with single comb and medium body size. Presence of Frizzle plumage helps in fast dissipation of heat due to which birds are better adopted specially in tropical climate in arid zones under backyard production. Annual egg production of CARI Upcari is 220 eggs.

CARI Hitcari – This variety has been developed utilizing Indian native chicken with naked neck plumage, which are adapted to tropical climate especially for hot and humid coastal regions of the country. These multicoloured birds have single as well as pea comb and birds are larger in built. Annual egg production of CARI Hitcari is 200 eggs.

CARI Shyama – It is a cross of Kadaknath breed of Indian native chicken with CARI Red. Birds have plumage of various colours dominated by black. The skin, beak, shank, toes and soles are dark gray in colour. The peculiarity of this bird is that most of the internal organs (muscles and tissues) show the characteristics black pigmentation. The black colour of muscles and tissues is due to deposition of melanin pigment, which causes increase in protein and decrease of fat and muscle fibre. Annual egg production of CARI Shyama is 210 eggs whereas in SA PPLPP (2009) report Kadaknath hens start laying eggs 6 months onwards and eggs are laid in two to three clutches in a year with 25 to 30 eggs per clutch thus 80 to 90 eggs are produced in a year. So CARI Shyama is better performer than Kadaknath having same characteristics of Kadaknath fowl.

Giriraja and Swarnadhara – Varieties were developed by Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fishery Sciences University, Bangalore. The hybrid coloured chicken variety named Giriraja was developed for backyard rearing by College of Veterinary Science, Bangalore. The birds have a high egg production potential along with better growth compared to local varieties and are suited for mixed and backyard farming. Giriraja female lays about 130-150 eggs a year. The eggshell is brown in colour and thicker than that of other commercial eggs and does not break easily

Swarnadhara chickens – Have a high egg production potential along with better growth compared to other local varieties and are suited for mixed and backyard farming. The bird can be reared for its eggs and meat. It attains maturity from the 22-23rd week after hatching. Hens attain a body weight of about 3 kg and cocks about 4 kg. “Swarnadhara hens lay about 180-190 eggs in a year. When compared to Giriraja, this breed yields 15-20 eggs more in a year. The eggshell is brown in colour and thicker than that of other commercial eggs and does not break easily. The eggs can be stored for 8-10 days at room temperature during summer and during winter for about 15 days. The birds are sturdy and have a high longevity.

Vanaraja – is a backyard type bird developed by the Project Directorate on Poultry (PDP), Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh). It is a multi-coloured dual purpose bird with attractive plumage. The male parent has been developed for moderate juvenile body weight, long shanks and good immuno-competence. The female parent has been developed for high egg production, better egg size, high hatchability and immune competence. The plumage pattern and colour of Vanaraja bird is very attractive and closely resembles that of the desi fowl. Due to their relatively light weight and long shanks, these birds are capable to protect themselves from predators which are otherwise a major problem observed in birds reared in backyard. Vanaraja males attain moderate body weight at 8 weeks of age under regular feeding system and the pullets produce around 160-180 eggs in a laying cycle with minimum supplementation of locally available feed ingredients and other managemental inputs

Suggestions for obtaining high returns from backyard poultry farming

a) Protect from predators.
b) Provide additional concentrate feed.
c) Provide clean and fresh drinking water.
d) Provide optimum space to avoid overcrowding.
e) Proper vaccination, de-worming and veterinary care.
f) Regular disinfection of poultry house and surrounding

Conclusion

The eggs and meat of birds reared in the backyard farming fetches higher premium due to high consumer acceptability even in the urban sectors where plenty of eggs and poultry meat from commercial units are available. Besides stable supply of high-quality animal food, backyard poultry production promotes income opportunities particularly for the weaker sections in the tribal areas. The backyard farming will certainly improve the economic status of a majority of rural/tribal families from lower socio-economic groups in the rural/tribal areas. Backyard farming fulfill a wide range of functions e.g. the provision of meat and eggs, food for special festivals, chicken for traditional ceremonies, pest control and petty cash, utilizing minimum inputs, minimum human attention, and causing less environmental pollution. The backyard poultry farming with improved birds provide a better livelihood security to the poor farmers paving a way for sustainable agriculture in rural areas.
